Every product represents an investment in time, materials and expertise. When it is ready to ship, its packaging needs to reflect that same level of care.

This month, we’re highlighting custom wood crates and the people, technology and craftsmanship behind them at Wasatch Container’s Protective Packaging Division (PPD). Our latest Product of the Month video takes you inside the operation, showing how precision cutting and hands-on assembly come together to create protection for aerospace, military and industrial applications.

Watch our Product of the Month: Wood Crates video:

Custom Protection, Inside and Out

A well-designed crate starts with understanding the product it will carry. Its dimensions, weight, shape and sensitive components all influence how it should be supported and secured. The way it will be handled, transported and unpacked matters, too.

At Wasatch Container, our custom wood crates are designed around those requirements. Using 3D design software, our team develops solutions that fit the product and incorporate the features needed for its journey. These can include foam lining, fitted supports, heavy-duty hardware, removable lids, ramps and casters.

The video offers a close look at that approach, from foam cushioning inside a crate to shaped wooden supports surrounding a large component. Each serves a specific purpose: cushioning vulnerable areas, supporting the load or helping keep the product in position.

For customers shipping heavy, high-value products, these details can help reduce movement and the risk of damage during transit. That protection also helps avoid the disruption that follows a damaged shipment, including repairs, replacement costs and delayed installations.

Precision That Starts at the CNC Machine

Our CNC machine is an important part of the process. Featured in the video, this computer-controlled equipment brings precision and consistency to the cutting of components used in our custom packaging.

Did you know? Our CNC machine cuts with such fine precision that its margin of error is smaller than a grain of table salt.

That level of accuracy supports the detailed work behind a custom fit. When a design calls for shaped components, precise dimensions help the pieces come together as intended.

Technology is only part of the story. Throughout the video, you’ll also see our team measuring, assembling and fastening crate components. Their craftsmanship turns individual pieces into a finished packaging solution, bringing practical experience and attention to detail to every stage of the build.

The Expertise Behind Our Protective Packaging Division

Our PPD team brings together capabilities in wood crates, foam and protective cases to address a wide range of packaging needs.

That combination allows us to consider the complete package: the exterior structure, the cushioning inside and the way the product is supported. A heavy component may require a fitted wooden cradle, while a more delicate item may need carefully positioned foam protection.

The conversations shown in the video reflect an equally important part of the process. Understanding what customers are shipping and the challenges they face helps our team develop packaging that works for the people handling it as well as the product inside.

Connected to Utah’s Innovation Community

We’re proud of our relationship with our partners at 47G, an organization supporting Utah’s aerospace, defense and hard tech community. Wasatch Container is part of its member network, connecting our packaging expertise with industries developing complex, valuable products.

Our video highlights that connection with a look at the Zero Gravity Summit and our protective packaging displays. These opportunities bring our team into conversations about the products being developed in Utah and the protection they need as they move into the world.

For us, supporting innovation includes helping protect the work behind it. Through PPD, we bring custom design, precision equipment and experienced people together to help customers prepare their products for the next stage of their journey.
